JAPN 403: Pre-Capstone
Course Description: This course aims to develop an advanced level of academic communication through the formulation of research questions on linguistic and cultural topics, using appropriate research methods and critical thinking skills. Students utilize a variety of information sources to investigate, organize, and analyze the information. Taught in Japanese. (Prereq: JAPN 300 or equivalent with a C- or better)
Course Narrative: Through this course we began the process of deciding what our capstone projects would be and whom we would be working with. We analyzed precious senpai's capstones in order to learn about things that have worked in the past, and what to avoid doing in our own works. We also learned about various techniques to improve our papers and presented on this methods in class. Using "The Craft of Research" we learned about how to formulate effective research questions and determined how to find and properly document our research using various tools in our library and a program called zotero. We worked closely with Dr. Shigeko Sekine, Dr. Yoshiko Saito-Abbott and Dr. Dustin Wright on refining our projects and narrowing down our topics in order to create the best possible projects we could. I'll be working with Alisha Romano and Annatasha Aguire, and our topic revolved around women's movements in Japan.
